Our next guest at DCR Gueststudios is Jose Jay B. Cruz.
Jose Jay B. Cruz is the Artistic Director of Transitopia Contemporary Dance Commune, formerly known as Dancing Wounded, one of the leading, most innovative contemporary dance companies in the Philippines. Transitopia is annually featured at the Wi-Fi Body – Independent and Contemporary Dance Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He has participated in international dance festivals as a solo dancer in Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Korea, Shanghai and finalist to the 2006 Yokohama SoloXDuo Dance Competition in Japan. He is also a Carlos Palanca Awardee for Literature and a fellow to the UP Writers Workshop. He received the 2009 Asian Cultural Council’s Josie Natori Award to study choreography and dance composition in New York. . In the same year he became a guest mentor for the OMI International Dance Collective residency in NYC and was featured under the Visiting Artist program of the 2009 Bates Dance Festival.
A year after, his solo work “Contemporary Investigation Number One” constructed during the Bates Dance Festival became the genesis for the Prince Claus Fund grant that initiated an ambitious project of addressing function of Contemporary Dance in a country of poverty and corruption like the Philippines by capturing a new way of MOVING thru an archetypal gesture that seems to capture the essence of the 21st century. That project was called Contemporary Corporeality Dance Residency.
This year the Prince Claus Fund awarded another grant to Transitopia’s residency called HyperCorporeality Colab. This grant will bring into a composition/choreography residency the historical development of shifts in the concept of time, space, shape, motion, representation of the human body and its impact to human behavior in a mash up of 3 fields of studies – Social Technology/Innovation, Visual Arts and Dance. This is another dream project that Transitopia will courageously take within the perspective that the Philippine soil is the most powerful center for such a study by virtue of its political, cultural and economic experience.
This April, Jay Cruz will part of the 'Ervaar Daar Hier Theater' project as an artist-in-residence at Korzo Theater in The Hague with several performances and lecture at the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
